At a recent conference on Aldo Leopold and his work hardly anyone in the panels mentioned what Leopold might be best known for doing: inspiring our system of protected wilderness. The topic has become passe among many environmental academics. One at the conference even called it a “colonialist” idea. This trendy attitude suggests a lot of such academics need to get out of their offices and conferences more. I explore the issue of what wilderness really is in a new post up at Patheos.
